Have questions about the SquashBridge Scholars Program? You’re in the right place. Explore our FAQs to learn more about what we do, who can join, and what to expect from the tryout process and year-round programming.

How much does the SquashBridge Scholars program cost?
The program is completely free. Students who make the SquashBridge Scholars team are provided with all the necessary equipment to play squash.

Who can participate?
Students in grades 3-5 enrolled in a Bridgeport school (private, public, or parochial) and/or who reside in Bridgeport can try out for our program. Priority is given to students from partner schools.

What is the tryout process?
Students are required to attend three tryout sessions, which include both squash play and academic enrichment activities. During these sessions, students are evaluated on their athletic ability, participation, and effort. Parents/caregivers also take part in an interview to learn more about the program and review participation requirements together.

What will my child do at SquashBridge Scholars?
Students participate in homework help sessions, literacy tutoring, academic enrichment activities, social-emotional learning activities, and squash instruction. Monday-Thursday, students will rotate between the library, squash courts, and classrooms. Fridays will feature workshops by community partners, free play, and other engaging activities. Field trips, community service opportunities, and family events will be offered throughout the year as well.

Why squash? Does my child need to know how to play to try out?
Squash is a fast, indoor, year-round sport that builds fitness, focus, and confidence. It can lead to regional and international travel as well as educational opportunities. No prior experience with squash is necessary.

What are the program requirements?
Consistent participation in the SquashBridge Scholars program, which includes attendance 5 days per week during the school year, and attendance at the 4-week summer program. Families are responsible for ensuring students have reliable transportation home.

Can I sign my child up for less than 5 days?
SquashBridge Scholars is not a drop-in program. In order to receive the full benefits of the program, students must attend regularly 5 days per week.
